Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) is a prescription medication used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in people 6 and older. It was approved to treat ADHD by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2007. It was also approved in 2015 for moderate to severe binge-eating disorder (BED) in adults.
Vyvanse is a once-daily central nervous system (CNS) stimulant that affects chemicals in the brain to improve focus, organization, and impulse control. The effects of Vyvanse can usually be felt within 2 hours of taking the drug, and symptom management can last up to 14 hours.
Unlike other stimulant medications, Vyvanse is a prodrug. Prodrugs are inactive until the body metabolizes them. Vyvanse is inactive until the body’s enzymes convert it into its active form. It then starts working to manage ADHD symptoms.
Its prodrug formulation helps Vyvanse take effect gradually and potentially reduces side effects. It also helps decrease the potential for misuse, which is a common issue with CNS stimulants.
Because Vyvanse is inactive until metabolized, it doesn’t produce the rapid “high” feeling common with most CNS stimulants.
Vyvanse is available as an oral capsule or chewable tablet.
Vyvanse’s active ingredient, lisdexamfetamine, is converted in the body to dextroamphetamine. Dextroamphetamine increases levels of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. Norepinephrine acts as a stress hormone and neurotransmitter and plays a key role in the “fight or flight" response by increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and alertness. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, reward, and pleasure and that controls movement and emotional responses. By increasing levels of norepinephrine and dopamine, Vyvanse helps reduce hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention.
A 2012 study found that Vyvanse also may improve executive functioning in academic and work environments. Executive functioning includes mental skills like organizing, prioritizing, focusing attention, and regulating emotions. These skills help individuals break down complex tasks into smaller steps, stay on schedule, and adapt to changes or challenges. ADHD is often linked to deficits in executive functioning.
Vyvanse is FDA-approved for children 6 years and older, adolescents, and adults with ADHD. It’s also FDA-approved for adults with moderate to severe BED.
Before you can get Vyvanse, you need a prescription from a healthcare provider who can assess your health history and symptoms to determine if it’s a medically necessary part of your care.
To get a Vyvanse prescription, you first need to consult with a qualified healthcare professional experienced in treating ADHD. This can include a psychiatrist (MD), psychiatric nurse practitioner (PNP), primary care provider (PCP or MD), physician assistant/associate (PA), or nurse practitioner (NP).
A licensed, board-certified provider on Klarity Health can evaluate your ADHD symptoms, recommend appropriate treatment, and create a customized care plan. If your provider determines Vyvanse is medically necessary for you, your provider will send the prescription to your chosen pharmacy, whether in person or online.
Your provider may also recommend therapy as part of your treatment plan. If they do, you’ll work with different providers for therapy and medication management.

Vyvanse and its generic, lisdexamfetamine, are available as oral capsules in 10-, 20-, 30-, 40-, 50-, 60-, and 70-milligram strengths and as chewable tablets in 10-, 20-, 30-, 40-, 50-, or 60-milligram strengths.
The starting dose for Vyvanse or generic lisdexamfetamine is 30 milligrams daily, taken orally in the morning. You want to avoid afternoon dosing to decrease the chance of insomnia.
Vyvanse and generic lisdexamfetamine can be taken with or without food. The capsules can be swallowed whole or mixed with yogurt, water, or orange juice. The capsule’s contents must be dissolved entirely in the food or liquid, which must then be consumed immediately. Vyvanse and lisdexamfetamine chewable tablets are taken orally and should be thoroughly chewed before they’re swallowed.
If you need to increase your dosage, your provider will have you increase your dose by 10 or 20 milligrams weekly until your symptoms are under control. The maximum daily dose is 70 milligrams.
If you need to stop taking Vyvanse or lisdexamfetamine, your provider will have you gradually decrease the amount you take each day to help prevent withdrawal symptoms, which can include fatigue and depression.
Vyvanse and generic lisdexamfetamine can cause side effects. Common side effects include loss of appetite (anorexia), anxiety, weight loss, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, irritability, trouble sleeping, nausea, stomach pain, and vomiting.
More serious side effects can include increased blood pressure and heart rate, circulation problems in fingers and toes (peripheral vasculopathy, including Raynaud’s phenomenon), psychiatric adverse events, motor or verbal tics, and worsening of Tourette syndrome.
When taken with medications or supplements that affect serotonin levels, Vyvanse and generic lisdexamfetamine may lead to serotonin syndrome, also known as serotonin toxicity. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include weakness, confusion, hallucinations, fever, excessive sweating (diaphoresis), rapid breathing (tachypnea), and a rapid heartbeat (tachycardia). Severe cases can be life threatening.
Both generic lisdexamfetamine and Vyvanse are controlled substances and have an FDA-boxed warning for the risk of abuse, misuse, and addiction. If you have a history of substance use disorder (SUD), discuss the risks versus benefits of taking either medication with your provider.
If you take lisdexamfetamine or Vyvanse and have any negative side effects, work with your provider and consider reporting side effects to the FDA by visiting MedWatch or calling 1-800-FDA-1088.

In Canada, Takeda Pharmaceutical, the manufacturer of Vyvanse, offers a patient assistance program for Vyvanse as part of its innoviCares program. The program helps eligible patients cover the cost difference between brand-name Vyvanse and generic lisdexamfetamine. There’s no similar option in the U.S.
You can also use a prescription savings card or drug discount program, such as GoodRx, NeedyMeds, SingleCareRx, WellRx, Drugs.com, and similar services, to save anywhere from 3% to 80% on lisdexamfetamine or Vyvanse, with or without insurance coverage.
CNS stimulants that are FDA-approved for the treatment of ADHD, like Vyvanse, Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine), and Ritalin (methylphenidate), are commonly used as a first-choice treatment for ADHD because they’re effective at controlling symptoms.
There’s little research that directly compares Vyvanse to other stimulants, but a 2013 study of children and adolescents found that patients treated with lisdexamfetamine had significantly better symptom improvement than those treated with methylphenidate. Unlike some other stimulants, Vyvanse is a prodrug, meaning it must be metabolized in the body to become active. This results in a slower, more gradual onset of effectiveness, which can help reduce the intense “high" feeling sometimes associated with stimulant medications.
Non-stimulant medications for ADHD, such as Strattera (atomoxetine) and Qelbree (viloxazine), are selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (NRIs) that work differently from stimulants. Instead of increasing dopamine release, they function by preventing the reabsorption of norepinephrine and serotonin into the brain’s nerve cells. Elevated levels of norepinephrine and serotonin are linked to decreased hyperactivity, better focus, and improved impulse control. Because they are not classified as controlled substances, Strattera and Qelbree don’t carry a risk of abuse, misuse, or addiction, which may make them a better option for individuals with substance use concerns.
While FDA-approved medications like Strattera (atomoxetine) and Qelbree (viloxazine) can be effective for treating ADHD, they can still cause side effects. Common side effects include decreased appetite, nausea, fatigue, irritability, dry mouth, insomnia, and headaches.
And all stimulants, including Vyvanse, Adderall, and Ritalin, can cause side effects, that include insomnia, reduced appetite, nausea, increased heart rate, and irritability. They’re also controlled substances and can lead to misuse, abuse, and dependency.
The best way to find out which ADHD medication is best for you is to talk to an ADHD provider about your specific symptoms, what medications you’ve already tried, and your treatment goals.
