Evekeo (amphetamine sulfate) is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2014 for the management of ADHD symptoms in adults and children 3 years and older. It’s also FDA-approved for the treatment of narcolepsy and the short-term treatment for exogenous obesity (when someone eats too many calories and stores excess fat).
Evekeo ODT is an orally disintegrating tablet and was FDA-approved in 2019 for children ages 6 to 17.
Evekeo’s main ingredients are levoamphetamine and dextroamphetamine, collectively known as amphetamine sulfate.
Evekeo increases neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) in the brain, specifically dopamine and norepinephrine. Neurotransmitters help brain cells communicate. Norepinephrine plays a role in the body’s stress response and helps regulate sleep, alertness, and blood pressure, while dopamine is essential for movement and influences motivation, perception of reality, and the ability to experience pleasure. By increasing the availability of dopamine and norepinephrine, Evekeo helps improve focus and reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity in individuals with ADHD.
Evekeo’s effects can be felt as quickly as 45 minutes to 1 hour after taking a dose. You get rapid symptom relief, which helps manage daily activities at work, home, or school. Its effects continue for 4 to 6 hours after a dose is taken.
Evekeo is approved for individuals aged 3 and older, including adults, with ADHD.
Your provider will need to evaluate your symptoms, health history, and any prior ADHD diagnosis to determine if Evekeo is a medically necessary ADHD treatment option for you.
To get an Evekeo prescription, you need to meet with a healthcare provider who’s qualified to prescribe medications. Your provider will determine if Evekeo or another ADHD medication, if any, is a medically necessary part of your ADHD treatment plan.
Providers licensed to prescribe medications include primary care providers (PCPs and MDs), psychiatrists (MDs), psychiatric nurse practitioners (PNPs), physician’s assistants/associates (PAs), and nurse practitioners (NPs).
Licensed, board-certified providers on Klarity Health can evaluate your symptoms and prescribe Evekeo, recommend ADHD therapy, or both as part of a tailored ADHD treatment plan. If therapy and medication are recommended, you’ll work with separate providers for each.
If your provider decides Evekeo is a good option for you, they can send a prescription to a pharmacy of your choice, either online or locally.
Evekeo is taken in tablet form and is available in 5-milligram or 10-milligram strengths. For ADHD management in adults, the starting dose is normally 10 milligrams once or twice a day. The starting dose for children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 is usually 5 milligrams once or twice daily.
You take your first dose of Evekeo when you wake up, and your second dose, if needed, 4 to 6 hours later.
Your provider may adjust your dose based on your response and symptom management. If your daily dose needs to be increased, your provider will have you do it gradually by adding 10 milligrams each week until you reach your. ideal maintenance dose. Children and adolescents follow the same dosing schedule as adults. But, if their daily dosage needs increased, it’s typically increased by 5 milligrams each week. The maximum daily dose for children or adults is 40 milligrams.
If you need to stop taking Evekeo, your provider may have you decrease your dose gradually to prevent possible withdrawal symptoms.
Common side effects of Evekeo include headache, stomachache, trouble sleeping, decreased appetite, unpleasant taste, nervousness, dizziness, vomiting, dry mouth, and weight loss among others. These side effects are often mild and may subside as your body adjusts to the medication.
Less common but more serious side effects are possible. They include high blood pressure, mood changes, circulation problems in the fingers and toes, seizures, or heart-related issues.
As a Schedule II controlled substance, Evekeo has an FDA boxed warning for potential abuse, misuse, and addiction. When not taken as prescribed, Evekeo could lead to a substance use disorder (SUD).
A prescription is required before you can begin taking Evekeo. It’s not recommended for individuals with specific heart conditions, certain mental health issues, or those with a history of substance abuse.
Not everyone who takes Evekeo will have side effects. If you have any side effects while taking Evekeo, tell your healthcare provider. And if you take it and have any negative side effects, consider reporting them to the FDA by visiting MedWatch or calling 1-800-FDA-1088.
According to drugs.com, with its discount, the cost of 30 5-milligram or 10-milligram Evekeo tablets is $261. There’s no generic version of Evekeo.
Azurity Pharmaceuticals, which makes Evekeo, offers a copay savings program for eligible people. With the program, if you’re insured and your co-pay exceeds $30, you could get a 30-day supply of Evekeo for $30. If you’re uninsured, you get a 30-day supply for $75.
You can also use a prescription or drug discount card from drugs.com, GoodRx, SingleCareRx, WellRx, and others to save from 3 to 80% on the cost of Evekeo with and without insurance.
Evekeo’s main ingredients are levoamphetamine and dextroamphetamine, known as amphetamine sulfate, and the same 2 ingredients in Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine). But Evekeo has a formulation with a 1 to 1 ratio of 50% levoamphetamine and 50% dextroamphetamine. Adderall uses 75% dextroamphetamine and 25% levoamphetamine. There’s no research on the pros or cons of the different ratios.
Evekeo is a stimulant. Stimulants work quickly to help calm ADHD symptoms, but they can also produce side effects like insomnia or a feeling of being “high.” Stimulant medications have a higher risk of being misused or leading to dependency.
Non-stimulants, like Strattera (atomoxetine), are less likely to be abused and can have fewer side effects associated than stimulants. It’s possible to use a stimulant and non-stimulant at the same time for ADHD treatment.
Non-stimulants take longer to work than stimulants. For example, Strattera can take 2 to 6 weeks to be fully effective for ADHD symptom relief. Non-stimulants like Strattera and Qelbree (viloxazine) have side effects too, which can include, but aren’t limited to, dry mouth, nausea, decreased appetite, fatigue, irritability, dizziness, and constipation.
Compared to other ADHD medications, clinicians rate amphetamines (like Evekeo) better for reducing core ADHD symptoms than atomoxetine and methylphenidate (the active in ingredient in Ritalin and other ADHD medications). But, amphetamines may be more poorly tolerated and more people discontinue them due to side effects.
