Doxycycline online appointments fast

Doxycycline is an antibiotic in the tetracycline class. It’s effective at treating a variety of bacterial infections, like respiratory tract infections, skin issues, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Doxycycline also has anti-inflammatory properties. It works by blocking bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow.

What is doxycycline?

An antibiotic in the tetracycline family, Doxycycline is effective at treating a wide range of infections and issues. It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, some STIs, and even severe cases of acne. It also serves as prophylaxis for malaria and treatment for Lyme disease.

Research suggests that doxycycline may have anti-inflammatory properties in addition to its effect on bacteria. So, some providers may prescribe it to treat rosacea, acne, or other skin issues. Doxycycline may be prescribed off-label (something it’s not approved for) to treat rosacea, periodontitis, and Q fever.

While most people know doxycycline by some of its brand names, like Vibramycin, Adoxa, Doryx, Monodox, and Oracea, the drug is available in many formulations, like tablets, liquid suspensions, and capsules. Depending on the condition, extended-release forms may also be applicable. Because of its effectiveness and the many ways it can be used, doxycycline is commonly prescribed.

How does doxycycline work?

Doxycycline works by slowing down or stopping the production of proteins in bacteria. It inhibits bacteria from growing and reproducing.

The medication works on a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as some parasites, including the malaria-causing type. Because it’s effective with a broad range of antibiotics, doxycycline is often used to treat infections that don’t respond to other antibiotics. Doxycycline also works in treating some atypical bacteria, like Chlamydia and Mycoplasma.

Doxycycline, unlike beta-lactam antibiotics that block the building of the bacterial cell wall, hinders bacterial proliferation on a molecular scale. This is useful against non-conventional pathogens, such as mycoplasma pneumonia, which lack a cell wall structure.

Who can take doxycycline?

Doxycycline is approved by the FDA for use in adults and children 8 years or older. It’s approved for and is especially effective for infections like pneumonia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, respiratory infections, some STIs, and after exposure to anthrax. It can also be used as a preventive measure for those traveling to regions where malaria is present. It may be used off-label to treat acne and rosacea.

In general, doxycycline is well tolerated. But, it’s not recommended for use during pregnancy due to how it may impact tooth and bone development in a fetus. Providers may also be careful in prescribing doxycycline for children under the age of 8, except in the case of severe infections where the benefits exceed the risks. People with severe liver disease should be monitored while taking this medication, as doxycycline is metabolized in the liver and can cause serious changes to liver functioning.

Doxycycline may also be used for treatment in people allergic to penicillin in cases of syphilis or bacterial pneumonia. It can also be given to individuals with acne vulgaris because of its antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties.

How to get a doxycycline online prescription

To get a doxycycline prescription online, start by talking to a qualified healthcare provider about your symptoms. They can determine if you have an infection or skin condition that may be best treated by doxycycline. Providers who can prescribe antibiotics like doxycycline include physicians (MDs), nurse practitioners (NPs), and physician assistants (PAs).

Providers licensed in your state can write an online prescription for doxycycline. You can find an online or in-person provider in your state on Klarity Health and schedule an appointment in minutes.

Doxycycline dosages and how to use it

Doxycycline is available in different forms and doses. That means your provider can choose the best dose and form for your needs. It’s important to follow your provider’s instructions when taking doxycycline.

In tablet and capsule form, doxycycline is available in 20-, 50-, 75-, 100-, and 150-milligram doses. Delayed-release forms are available in 40-, 80-, and 200-milligram doses. Doxycycline hyclate delayed release tablets are available in 75-, 100-, and 150-milligram doses.  If you receive doxycycline at a hospital, they may give you an injectable formulation, which may depend on your condition.

For adults, the typical starting dose of doxycycline is 200 milligrams the first day, followed by a dose of 100- or 50-milligrams every 12 hours.

If you are traveling to an area where there is malaria, your provider may recommend that you start the medication 1-2 days before traveling and continue for up to 4 weeks after you travel.

For the treatment of acne, your provider may start you at a lower dose of 40 milligrams per day.

If you forget to take a dose, you can take it when you remember. But, if it’s close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double your dose. Your provider will instruct you to take the entire course of antibiotics.

Your provider may recommend that you sit up after taking doxycycline, as it can lead to irritation in your esophagus. To minimize discomfort, your provider may recommend that you take doxycycline with a full glass of water.

Doxycycline should be stored at room temperature away from sunlight and humidity. Do not take expired doxycycline, as it can lead to kidney damage.

Doxycycline side effects and warnings

Common side effects of doxycycline include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, sensitivity to sunlight, headache, and skin rash or itching.

Adverse effects can include severe allergic reactions like hives, swelling, or trouble breathing. Doxycycline can also lead to hypertension, liver problems, intracranial tension (increased pressure in your skull), and severe gastrointestinal issues.

Long-term use of doxycycline can lead to an overgrowth of fungi, leading to secondary infections.

Doxycycline may interact with other medications. Antacids and iron supplements may lower the absorption of doxycycline.

There are some precautions when taking doxycycline. For instance, your provider may not recommend doxycycline if you are taking a retinoid medication like isotretinoin due to the potential of developing or worsening intracranial hypertension. Your provider may not recommend doxycycline for young children due to tooth discoloration. If you have an esophageal ulcer, your provider may recommend that you increase your water intake to reduce irritation. In rare cases, taking doxycycline can lead to a rare, but life-threatening skin condition called Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

If you take doxycycline in any form and have any side effects, work with your provider and consider reporting negative side effects to the FDA by visiting MedWatch or calling 1-800-FDA-1088.

What does doxycycline cost?

According to drugs.com, a supply of 16 50-milligram capsules of doxycycline can cost $28.56, while 20 100-milligram capsules can cost $22.83. Sixty tablets at 20 milligrams can cost $46.97.

Delayed release capsules and tablets are more expensive. A supply of 30 40-milligram delayed release capsules can cost $533.02. A supply of 120 50-milligram delayed release tablets may cost $519.82.

If you have insurance that covers doxycycline, you’ll likely pay less. Coupons from prescription discount sites can also help you save money, with or without insurance.

How does doxycycline compare to antibiotic medications?

Doxycycline is frequently compared with other commonly used antibiotics, such as amoxicillin and clindamycin.

Doxycycline is an antibiotic effective for a broad range of infections and conditions. It is FDA approved to treat respiratory infections, STIs, Lyme disease, and malaria prophylaxis, and it may be used off-label to treat acne and rosacea. Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic.

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic in the penicillin class. It is a beta-lactam antibiotic approved for infections of the ear, nose, and throat, as well as infections of the respiratory and urinary tract. It may also be used to manage skin infections and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections. It may be more effective than doxycycline at treating intracellular pathogens like chlamydia and mycoplasma.

Clindamycin is an antibiotic in the lincosamide class. It is approved to treat infections in the respiratory system, skin and soft tissue, bones and joints, dental infections, and gynecological infections. It is often used as an alternative for people who are allergic to penicillin. Clindamycin may be more effective in treating anaerobic infections.

The side effects for doxycycline, amoxicillin, and clindamycin are similar and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin rash.

The best way to find out which antibiotic medication is best for you is to talk to a healthcare provider.
