What is Daytrana?

Daytrana (methylphenidate) is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006 to help manage ADHD symptoms in children ages 6 to 17. It’s a brand-name medication made by Noven Therapeutics.

Daytrana comes as a patch worn on the skin. It delivers methylphenidate transdermally. This lets the medication be absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream continuously. The Daytrana patch is worn for up to 9 hours and provides up to 10 hours of symptom control.

A methylphenidate transdermal patch, a generic version of Daytrana, is also available.

How does Daytrana work for ADHD?

Daytrana works by gradually increasing the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, key neurotransmitters in the brain involved in focus, motivation, and response control. These neurotransmitters, also called chemical messengers, help improve communication among brain cells. Low levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are thought to contribute to ADHD symptoms of trouble focusing, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.

By increasing the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, Daytrana helps reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improves concentration. Its effects typically start within 2 hours of applying the patch and can last up to 10 hours to provide symptom relief throughout the day.

Who can take Daytrana for ADHD?

Daytrana is approved for use in children ages 6 to 17. It’s also used off-label (meaning for something it’s not FDA-approved for) to treat ADHD in adults.

You need a prescription to take Daytrana. To get one, meet with a healthcare provider who can assess your symptoms and health history to make sure Daytrana fits with your ADHD treatment plan and management goals.

Daytrana dosages and how to use it

Daytrana is a patch applied to the skin. It comes in 10-, 15-, 20-, and 30-milligram strengths. The bigger the dose, the larger the transdermal patch will be.

The typical starting dose is 10 milligrams a day. After a week, your provider can increase your dose if needed. If you need a higher dose, you’ll move to the next strength patch weekly until you find the dose that works to best control your symptoms. The maximum daily dose is 30 milligrams.

You place the Daytrana patch on a clean, dry area of your hip, avoiding your waistline and areas where your clothing might rub it off. You want to apply it 2 hours before you need symptom management and wear it for no more than 9 hours.

While wearing the Daytrana patch, avoid getting wet, such as showering or swimming, so the patch doesn’t come loose. Also avoid heat from a heating pad, which can increase the absorption rate of Daytrana.

After 9 hours, remove the patch. The next morning, place a new patch on your opposite hip in an area where you’ve not recently applied a patch.

You never want to discontinue Daytrana abruptly because it can lead to withdrawal symptoms. And your provider will have you decrease use slowly.

Daytrana side effects and warnings

If you take Daytrana, you may have common side effects that include decreased appetite, nausea, insomnia, headache, vomiting, mood changes, dizziness, stomach pain, weight loss, trouble eating, and skin reactions at the application site.

Serious side effects are less common but can occur. They include seizures, painful and prolonged erections (priapism), circulation problems in fingers and toes, rapid heart rate (tachycardia), high blood pressure (hypertension), slowed growth in children, eye problems, new or worsening tics or Tourette syndrome, loss of skin color, and an allergic skin rash.

Daytrana is also a Schedule II controlled substance and has an FDA-boxed warning for the risk of a high potential for abuse, misuse, and addiction. If you have a history of substance use disorder, discuss the risks of taking Daytrana with your provider. Daytrana may not be recommended for you.

If you take Daytrana and have any negative side effects, work with your provider and consider reporting side effects to the FDA by visiting MedWatch or calling 1-800-FDA-1088.

What does Daytrana cost?

According to GoodRx, with its discount, the average cost of 30 Daytrana patches for any strength is $198.51 in Los Angeles, California. Prices will vary for different locations.

GoodRx shows the cost of 30 generic methylphenidate patches — any strength — as $124 with their discount in Los Angeles.

Daytrana’s manufacturer, Noven Pharmaceuticals, Inc., has a savings program where you can pay as little as $20 for each prescription of 30 patches if your out-of-pocket cost is $100 or less. If your out-of-pocket cost is more than $100, you can save $80 on each prescription of 30 patches. The program is good for 12 prescriptions of 30 patches.

Discount programs from platforms like GoodRx, WellRx, NeedyMeds, and SingleCareRx can also help you save 3 to 80% on prescriptions with or without insurance.

How does Daytrana compare to other ADHD medications?

Daytrana’s active ingredient, methylphenidate, is also used in other common CNS stimulants, such as Ritalin, Concerta, Focalin, Quillivant, Jornay PM, and Metadate CD.

Daytrana is a transdermal patch, while other CNS stimulants come in different formulations, like oral tablets and solutions (Ritalin), a chewable tablet (QuilliChew), and a delayed-release extended-release capsule (Jornay PM). They also work for different lengths of time. Daytrana’s transdermal patch formulation offers an alternative for those sensitive to or who struggle to swallow pills.

There’s no research on the pros or cons of the different methylphenidate formulations, and it may take some trial and error to see which works best for you.

Ritalin, Concerta, Focalin, Quillivant, Jornay PM, and Metadate CD are all FDA approved to treat ADHD. They can all have side effects, including decreased appetite, nausea, irritability, fatigue, dry mouth, insomnia, and headache. Methylphenidate products, like those mentioned,  are controlled substances that can cause abuse, misuse, or dependency.

Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine) and Evekeo (amphetamine sulfate) are other stimulants approved to treat ADHD. Clinicians generally consider amphetamines more effective at reducing core ADHD symptoms compared to methylphenidate. Amphetamines, though, might be less well-tolerated and cause more side effects.

Adderall and Evekeo are FDA-approved to treat ADHD. Their side effects can include decreased appetite, nausea, fatigue, irritability, dry mouth, insomnia, and headache. Like Daytrana, both are Schedule II controlled substances that can cause abuse, misuse, or dependency.

Non-stimulants,  Strattera (atomoxetine), offer an alternative to stimulants and have a lower risk of abuse and fewer side effects But they take longer to take effect — Strattera, for instance, may take 2 to 6 weeks for complete ADHD symptom relief. Non-stimulants like Strattera and Qelbree (viloxazine) can also cause side effects, including dry mouth, nausea, reduced appetite, fatigue, irritability, dizziness, and constipation.

The best way to find out which ADHD medication is best for you is to talk to an ADHD specialist.
