Types and symptoms of anxiety

There are different types of anxiety, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and phobias among others. Clinical anxiety is more than feeling nervous or fearful, it’s persistent and interferes with your quality of life.

Symptoms of different types of anxiety vary, and can include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Often feeling on edge, irritable, restless, out of control, and/or worried
  • Getting tired easily or struggling to sleep
  • Headaches and unexplained aches and pains
  • Trouble concentrating or focusing
  • A racing or pounding heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Intense anxiety about places, objects, or activities
  • Avoiding places, objects, or activities that cause you anxiety or fear

How anxiety is diagnosed

Anxiety is diagnosed by a medical or mental healthcare professional, typically a psychiatrist or psychologist who will:

  • Ask about your medical and mental health history and current status
  • Ask you about your current symptoms, how intense they are, how long they last, how they affect your daily life, and when they started
  • Use a standardized anxiety assessment tool, such as the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21 and DASS-42), and/or the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7)

Online anxiety treatment

A combination of medications (when medically necessary), counseling, and other interventions is typically recommended to treat anxiety.

Licensed medical professionals on Klarity Health work with you to create the right in-person or online anxiety treatment plan for you and your needs. Your provider may recommend medications, such as tranquilizers, beta-blockers, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) among others. They may also recommend behavioral counseling or therapy, support groups, or stress management.

If your provider recommends therapy and medication, you’ll see a different provider for each service. And you can find providers for both on Klarity Health.
